Planners asked to approve Cacapon State Park expansion

The Morgan County Planning Commission will consider a commercial building permit for renovation and expansion of Cacapon State Park’s lodge and other facilities at their meeting next Tuesday, October 24.

Planners will review the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources application for a commercial building permit to do the work.

Work includes renovations to the existing lodge and construction of a 33,776 sq. ft. addition on the north end of the lodge. That extension is expected to add 78 guest rooms, meeting rooms, a kitchen, dining room and pool to Cacapon’s lodge.

The state park agency is also asking planners to grant an extension of the deadline for getting Department of Highways approvals for the project.

Plans for the expansion have been complete for several years, but the state wouldn’t fund the project. Recently, the West Virginia Economic Development Authority approved the sale of bonds to pay for the major upgrade, which is expected to cost more than $23 million.

The Planning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. on October 24 in the Morgan County Courthouse.
