by Jamie Harris

The Berkeley Springs High School Lady Indians Soccer Team picked up a huge 2-1 sectional win this past week when they hosted the Petersburg Lady Vikings Thursday, September 7.

The Lady Indians scored the first goal in the first half when senior Katherine McLaughlin found the back of the net to give Berkeley Springs a 1-0 lead.

The score stayed 1-0 going into the break as senior goalkeeper Morgan Smailes kept the Lady Vikings at bay with several key stops.

In the second half, the Lady Indians increased the score to 2-0 when junior McKayla Romo scored on a penalty kick. Petersburg rallied to cut the score to 2-1 when they scored off a Berkeley Springs defensive miscue.

From there Smailes and the defensive efforts of Darby Harris, Hynnja Dietrich, Kendal Williams and Emily Aronhalt kept the Lady Vikings out of sync.

With the win Berkeley Springs improved to 2-3-1 for the season.

The Lady Indians hosted the Southern Garrett Lady Rams from Oakland, Md. on Saturday, September 9.

Southern jumped out to a 1-0 lead and maintained that into the half.

In the second half, Southern continued to score and pushed the lead to 4-0.

With about four and a half minutes left in the game senior McLaughlin off an assist from junior Taylor Payne hit a hard cross shot that hit the corner cross bar and bounced in for the goal and cut into the Southern lead at 4-1.

The Lady Indians were not able to score after that and fell to the Lady Rams 4-1.
