Mary E. Roach


Mary Elizabeth Roach, age 85, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs.

Born September 10, 1931 in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Herbert Thornton and Annie Elizabeth Allen Merchant.

She was of the Methodist faith. She attended public schools in Morgan County, including the Pious Ridge School. Mary operated her own pulpwood business for 44 years, operated Roach’s Trailer Court, worked seasonally at local canneries and orchards, at National Fruit in Winchester and at Shawnee Springs in Cross Junction. She was a member of Alderton Dawson American Legion Post #60, Women of the Moose Chapter #1311, Risinger-Stotler V.F.W. Post #4019 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #4244, all in Berkeley Springs. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting, fishing, bird watching and all types of wildlife. She loved her dog and faithful companion, Rusty.

Surviving are her children, Barbara Ann Kave and her companion Bill Lewis of Falling Waters, W.Va., Shirley Ann Robinson of Berkeley Springs, Danny Celvester Roach and his wife Mary Ann of Cross Junction, Va., Rose Marie Wills and her companion Gregory Creason of Lovettsville, Va., Wilma Lee Richards and her husband John, III and Robin Elizabeth Beck-Hamrick and her husband Doug, all of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Portia Rico Shives of Berkeley Springs and Alice Jean McCulloh of Mercersburg, Pa.; two brothers, Herbert Thornton Merchant, Jr. and Kenneth Eugene Merchant, both of Berkeley Springs; 12 grandchildren, James Victor Kave and his wife Holly of Auburn, Wash., Ann Marie Cosner and Bryant of Falling Waters, Heather Nicole Whetzel and her husband Raymond, Savanna Jean Roach and Jeffery Harold Kerns, all of Cross Junction, Va., Donna Lynn Mowery and her husband Harold of Augusta, W.Va., Joshua William Wills and his fiancée Jaunie of Chambersburg, Pa., Elmer Franklin Wills III and his wife Morgan, Shawn Alexander Hornbaker, Kayla Danielle Richards and Dakota James Hamrick, all of Berkeley Springs and Leonard Ray Roach- Hovermale and his wife Cheyenne of Clarksburg, W.Va.; nine great-grandchildren, Tyler Kave and Brandon Kave, both of Auburn Wash., Cody Cosner and his wife Cheyenne and Mace Kave II, all of Falling Waters, Lexis Kerns of Shockeysville, Va., Alesia Kerns, Zackary Roach and Lucas Whetzel, all of Cross Junction and Londyn Wills of Chambersburg; three great-great-grandchildren, Jacob Cosner of Falling Waters, Aurora Robertson and Aiden Robertson, both of Augusta and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Celvester Roach on June 11, 1962; her companion of 38 years, James Fisher Beck; three sisters, Anna Mae Merchant, Emma May Merchant and Dorothy Lee Merchant; three brothers, Vernon Ernest Merchant, Charles Edward Merchant and Glen Cleo Merchant; one grandson, Carl Mace Kave and two sons-inlaw, Edward Kave and Dale Robinson.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Pastor Charles Garza officiating. Interment was in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.

The family received friends from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home.
