Dawn & Randy Beal to be inducted into the ABF Hall of Fame 2017

Randy and Dawn Beal Randy and Dawn Beal This year’s inductees into the Apple Butter Festival Hall of Fame are volunteer couple Dawn and Randy Beal. They are being honored for their years of work doing one of the most challenging tasks of the festival – lining up the parade.

Everyone likes the parade, but it’s nowhere near as easy to do as it looks.

Work begins the night before when the Beals mark out the spaces rain or shine and make assignments. They assure there are several unassigned places at the end of the parade for all the folks who never bother to apply for the parade and just show up.

The morning of the parade the work begins as entrants show up and have to be put in place. Randy Beal said his biggest task is throwing himself on the hoods of cars dropping off participants that absolutely refuse to follow the one-way directions.

When I asked how they initially got involved, Dawn Beal replied: “you did it.” She came to a revival meeting we had six years ago at the Mexican restaurant. “I liked a meeting that had margaritas,” she said.

Dawn likes several parts of the parade work: the different age groups that participate and the fact that they all are still excited about being in the parade. She also likes seeing groups get into the theme creating their floats and entries.

The parade is just one part of all they do in their mission to make the community better. And they always work as a team. “We work well together,” said Dawn Beal. “I couldn’t do it alone.” Randy Beal agreed: “I do whatever she tells me to do.”

Two of their major activities are the Morgan County Soccer League and Biddy Buddy Basketball. For soccer, Dawn Beal serves as Risk Manager. “That means I deal with all the complaints,” she said. Randy Beal is registrar as well as referee and coaching coordinator. He also serves as head coach for two teams. Dawn Beal is coordinator of Biddy Buddy while Randy Beal organizes teams and coordinates coaches. She is also Secretary of Morgan County Parks and Recreation. Their other volunteer activities include 4H, Backpacks, Read Aloud and Sardine Club. Dawn Beal is PASS coordinator for the Intermediate School and serves on the board of the Morgan County Partnership.

“We have Monday nights free and a couple weeks in July,” said Dawn Beal about all their efforts. They still find time for professional work. Randy Beal is a Relationship Manager for First Data in Hagerstown and Dawn Beal works as Title 1 Parent Facilitator at Widmyer Elementary.

The couple have two sons: Cardin 12 and Brody nine. “By the time they grow up, they’ll probably never want to volunteer,” said Dawn Beal.

The Beals will be inducted into the Apple Butter Festival Hall of Fame at a luncheon at The Country Inn on Wednesday, September 20. Their induction brings the total number of members in the Hall of Fame to 73.
