Davison captures first Cross Country Invitational

Heironimus places second
by Jamie Harris

This past weekend the Berkeley Springs cross country program kicked off their 2017 season with a home meet at their brand new cross country course located in the cozy confines of Cacapon State Park. The beautiful but challenging course brought not only Berkeley Springs in to run but also Sherando (VA) and Paw Paw High School. Runners were treated to a course that started off with a challenging hill and eventually led to all the runners running across the reservoir dam.

On the girl’s side the Lady Indians were without three of their top runners as Amanda Lupton, Stephanie Golden and Alex Banks sit out the event with injuries. However Lady Indians junior Brooke Davison picked the right time to shine as the junior kept pace with a runner from Sherando for most of the race and in the final stages of the course Davison used her speed to bolt past the Sherando runner and capture her first ever varsity cross country win. The Lady Indians as a team finished in second place behind Sherando.

On the boy’s side the Indians Logan Heironimus (senior) used the race as the “Comeback.” Heironimus had to set out last springs track season due to injuries. So with a careful pace at the start due to the challenging hill that awaited Heironimus started to pick off runners one at a time before running out of time to catch a Sherando runner. Heironimus was able to finish in second place and the opportunity to compete again was a win for the senior runner.

Paw Paw’s Hunter Kasekamp was able to also complete the difficult course and finished in fifth place, while teammates Landon Ridgeway (sixth place) and Dominic Tanouye finished in seventh place.

Both the Berkeley Springs and Paw Paw boy’s teams had incomplete teams for this event and did not factor into the final team scores.

Final results will be in next week’s paper for the runners from Berkeley Springs and Paw Paw.
