John J. Carr


On August 22, 2017 John Joseph “Jack” Carr was relieved of his struggles with cancer and has passed into eternal life with his Savior.

Born May 12, 1935 in Camden, New Jersey, he was the son of the late James P. and Mary A. Aiken Carr.

He graduated from Camden

Catholic High School in 1955 and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. He received his honorable discharge as a Corporal in 1963 and was employed as a dispatcher for Union Carbide.

After his retirement in 1993 he and his wife Barbara visited Berkeley Springs, WV several times a year for eight years before finally purchasing a home and relocating to the area in 2000.

He was a faithful communicant at St. Vincent de Paul Church, where he served as an usher, a member of the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus.

He was an active and dedicated participant in AA and on his birthday in 2017 he received his “chip” for 37 years of sobriety.

He was also a volunteer for Morgan County Interfaith Emergency Care (MCIEC).

Jack was proud of his Irish heritage, his grandfather having emigrated from County Tyrone in 1882.

He enjoyed baseball and was a lifelong fan of the Philadelphia Phillies. After moving to Morgan County he took an interest in the Nationals and Orioles but remained loyal to his beloved Phillies.

He was a history buff and enjoyed reading about the events of World War II. He also enjoyed traveling and one of his favorite trips was to the Normandy landing beaches.

Jack is survived by his wife of 27 years, Barbara Ann Moorehead DeLaneo Carr whom he married on November 16, 1989 in Cherry Hill, NJ. Also surviving are his four children; John J., Daniel J., Eileen M. and Theresa A. all of Cherry Hill, NJ., two stepsons; Robert W. DeLaneo of The Woodlands, TX and Mark R. DeLaneo of Toledo, OH., two step grandsons, two step great granddaughters and several nephews & nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven siblings; Marie, Margaret (infant), James, Patrick, Margaret M., Joseph and Rita.

Mass of Christian Burial was offered at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 28, 2017 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Liberty & S. Washington Streets, Berkeley Springs, WV with the Rev. Fr. Leonard A. Smith as celebrant. Interment was at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at Calvary Cemetery, 2398 Route 70 West, Cherry Hill, NJ.

The family received friends from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, WV where the Rosary was recited at 7 p.m.
