Herbert W. Rankin Sr.


Herbert Wayne Rankin, Sr., age 69, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Winchester Medical Center.

Born January 5, 1948 in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of the late Vernon Garrison, Sr. and Helen Elizabeth Hollenbaugh Spielman Rankin.

He was of the Protestant faith. He was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School. He had worked in the body shop of Kirk Ford in Hancock, Md., both before and after his military service. He was a retired Non Commissioned Officer with the U. S. Air Force. Herb was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60 in Berkeley Springs and was active at Morgan County Senior Life Services. He enjoyed doing mechanical work on cars.

He is survived by his son, Herbert Wayne Rankin, Jr. and his companion, Wendy Sauer, of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Lois Rankin of Bay City, TX; one brother, Vernon Garrison Rankin, Jr. of Berkeley Springs; one step-grandson, Michael DeLoof of Hancock and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Mae “Susie” Willey Rankin on July 5, 2014 and two brothers, Roy Rankin and David Spielman.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs. Interment with military honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard at Bethel Cemetery.

The family received friends from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
