Commission approves Hotel/Motel funds requests

by Kate Shunney

Morgan County Commissioners whittled down $93,000 in requests for Hotel/Motel tax funds down to a figure they estimate will match revenue from the lodging tax for the coming fiscal year.

Officials are predicting they’ll receive roughly $130,000 in taxes from lodging businesses and vacation rental companies, who collect the tax from guests.

Half of that figure automatically goes to the local visitor’s bureau -- Travel Berkeley Springs -- as the lodging law dictates.

The other half -- $65,000 – is to be disbursed to local groups for tourism, beautification, historical or cultural efforts. Officials approved $67,429 in requests of Hotel/Motel funds on Wednesday, July 5:

—Morgan County Parks & Recreation for work on soccer fields, $15,000

—Morgan County Fair, $3,000

—Museum of the Berkeley Springs, $4,000

—Morgan Arts Council, $10,000

—County parks mowing, $16,229

—Berkeley Springs State Park Foundation for grants match on sidewalk and wall upgrades, $1,000

—Berkeley Springs fireworks, $4,000

—Town of Bath Streetscapes, Phase 4 grant match, $10,000

—Town of Bath North Berkeley Rail Trail, $3,000

—Paw Paw fireworks, $1,000

—Bath-Romney campaign signs, $200.
