Berkeley Springs Trio set the bar high

by Jamie Harris

Matt Chapman, Brady Price and Steven Shetler Matt Chapman, Brady Price and Steven Shetler Several years ago a talented group of female runners by the names of Danielle Haynes, Kinsey Reed, and Keri Shetler graduated Berkeley Springs High School with a lot of cross country and track medals to go along with several state championship honors.

This past spring another trio graduated Berkeley Springs High School and they too have left their marks as cross country and track runners with highly decorated running careers.

Matt Chapman, Brady Price and Steven Shetler accomplished their final goals this spring when they teamed up with junior Wes Colyer and blitzed the Class AA WV State Track & Field Championship 4x800 meter relay capping their amazing careers with a well-deserved state championship to go with a team state cross country championship title back in the fall of 2015.

Price also added a state championship in the 800 meters with a new school record time of 1:58.64.

Brady Price Brady Price Besides the state championships the three runners have had an outstanding career as members of the Berkeley Springs Indians Cross Country and Track Teams and leave the bar raised very high for any future Indian runners.

The journey of these three athletes took different paths when they entered the high school as freshmen. Shetler followed in his brother Corey Shetler and sister Keri Shetler’s footsteps as a distance runner for the Indians cross country and track teams.

Chapman and Price took to the pitch as members of the Indians Soccer Team for their first two years in high school. However, soon the running bug slowly bit them and the daily recruiting of Shetler paid off in a big way. Soon the “Team Shetler Built” came into play and from there on the Indians Cross Country and Track Teams started to put the entire state of West Virginia on notice that they were there to outrun people and collect some state gold and whatever other medals they could.

Matt Chapman Matt Chapman In the fall of 2015 the boys cross country team decided to rise from the shadows of their powerhouse girl’s teammates and make a name for themselves at the state cross country championships. Going into the state meet the boys were not anywhere in the conversations of a state team title as most of the talk centered on state powerhouse Bridgeport and how many points would they win another state title by?

Day after day the Indians cross country team trained for that final moment and in the end the efforts of Shetler, Chapman, Price, Logan Heironimus and Chucky Welch pushed the Tribe to their first ever boys cross country state team title by a mere two points over Bridgeport.

The same group of boys minus Welch entered the 2016 cross country season with high hopes of repeating as state champions. Once again they prepared throughout the summer and fall. However, injuries took their tolls on the team, but at the end of the state meet the Indians led by Chapman, Price, Shetler, Heironimus, Aaron Farris and Davy Mundey were able to stand on the podium as state runner ups.

Steven Shetler Steven Shetler In track the three runners started their track careers almost the same way. Shetler was on the track as a freshman and was joined by Chapman and Price their sophomore year. The same way the three prepped for successful cross country careers was put into play for their track success. As the three racked up impressive performances each season the highlight of their careers came this past spring on the track.

Shetler made the move to middle distance (400 meters, 800 meters, 4x400 relay and the 4x800 relay), Chapman (800 meters, 1600 meters, 3200 meters, 4x400 relay and the 4x800 relay) and Price (800 meters, 1600 meters, 4x400 relay and the 4x800 relay). From there each of the three set their sights on breaking school records and capturing state gold. As stated earlier the 4x800 meter relay was the icing on the cake.

However Chapman (2nd in the 1600 meters) and Shetler (2nd place in the 800 meters and 3rd place in the 400 meters) fell short of state titles despite their best running performances of the season. Price picked up a second state title when he outlasted Shetler in the 800 meters in a race for the ages. Together with Colyer they picked up another state medal with a fourth place finish in the 4x400 meter relay.

The following is an impressive outline of Shetler, Price and Chapman’s career accolades as a member of the Berkeley Springs Indians Cross Country and Track Teams. Accolades that include a state cross country team championship, a 4x800 meter relay state championship and an 800 meter state championship.
