Widmyer Elementary second grade teacher Jaclyn Snyder was recognized as an outstanding new teacher with the Mary Linn Fox Memorial First Year Teacher Award at the June 6 Morgan County School Board meeting.

Snyder received her bachelor’s degree from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania and majored in elementary education with a minor in reading.

Snyder said she had multiple teachers while she was growing up that inspired her to become a teacher. She’d worked with kids for over 15 years with babysitting and working in day care centers through college and had also taken child care courses in high school that included day care center work.

Her philosophy

Snyder feels it’s important for her students to feel welcomed and have a positive atmosphere for learning. She likes working in small groups at her classroom learning centers. Snyder especially enjoys seeing struggling students starting to understand concepts that they’re working on.

“It’s like a light bulb coming on,” she said.

Snyder also tries to keep kids moving and engaged and uses a lot of movement and songs throughout her lessons.

Snyder said she feels very lucky to have gotten the job teaching at Widmyer and really likes the atmosphere at the school.

Snyder said that Principal Rhett Beckman and Assistant Principal Ginnie Molnar “have been awesome to work with. The whole second grade team is amazing. They’ve helped me very much.”

Snyder lives in Pennsylvania and is involved in her community and church there. She said she helps a lot with kids’ activities at her church. She also likes to read, do yoga and spend time with her daughter and her cousin.

Snyder said she was really excited to receive the award and was surprised to receive it. She was honored to be nominated.

Snyder had this advice for other new teachers: don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help, use your resources and find some that can be a mentor to you.

A wonderful teacher

Widmyer Principal Rhett Beckman said that Snyder has been a wonderful addition to their faculty. She quickly became an active member of the second grade team and demonstrated the techniques and qualities of an experienced teacher.

“When you walk into her room, it is immediately evident that she is differentiating for her students; all students are learning about the same topic even though some are doing individual work, some are in small groups, and others are permitted to use creative license. By the end of the unit, students are able to demonstrate mastery,” he added.

“Widmyer is proud to have Ms. Snyder as a teacher and excited that she will be continuing with us next year,” Beckman said.

The Mary Lin Fox Memorial First Year Teacher Award is presented annually to a first year teacher “who instills in students a desire for the joys of learning and is a dedicated, nurturing professional.” The recipient receives a certificate for $250 of materials, supplies and equipment.
