Relay Around the World is theme for June 10 walk

The Morgan County Relay for Life fundraiser and awareness event for the American Cancer Society will be held this Saturday, June 10 at the Widmyer Elementary track in Berkeley Springs.

Opening ceremonies for the 12-hour event will take place at 6 p.m. During the ceremonies, local “Hometown Heroes” will perform a flag ceremony. All local veterans, fire, EMS, police and military service members are welcomed to participate and take their lap of recognition.

Event chair Sharon Schmeling said the theme for 2017 is “Relay Around the World.”

It will be seen in activities and decorations on team tents. There are six teams registered with 60 participants signed up.

“Our goal this year is $42,500, which is $10,000 more than last year. We are less than $2,000 dollars from hitting our goal, so we feel confident that we will surpass our goal and be a ‘purple event’,” said Schmeling. “Being a PURPLE EVENT and hitting our goal is quite an accomplishment for such a small county.”

Among the many activities will be a Survivor and Caregiver lap for those who fight cancer on a daily basis. This year’s Honorary Survivor is Kenny Simms, who will share his story and be celebrated for his cancer survival with family and peers.

Luminaries in honor or remembrance of those affected by cancer will be available for sale until 8:30 p.m. A Luminaria Ceremony takes place at 9:30 p.m.

This year, the event will include a special “Thank You Ceremony” at 10:15 p.m., followed by a surprise ceremony.

Teams and supporters will continue to walk and participate in fun activities until 6 a.m. Sunday. The public is welcome to attend and participate, even if individuals are not members of a registered team. Teams will have sales and raffles as further fundraisers at the event.

Local businesses, residents and groups are encouraged to “Paint the Town Purple” and decorate with purple lights or displays this week leading up to the Relay for Life.

Schmeling said the decorations “bring awareness to Relay for Life and what our community is doing together to fight this disease.”
