Eta Chapter members attend Alpha Phi State Convention

Fifteen members of Eta Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International attended the 75th Alpha Phi State Convention at the Resort at Glade Springs. The attendees were entertained by Cody Wickline, a Beckley native who appeared on “The Voice,” on Friday, April 28,

After the first general session Saturday morning, the members had the Founders’ Day Luncheon and heard from Dr. Carolyn Pittman, the International President of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She brought greetings from Austin, Texas, the site of the 2018 International Convention. She spoke of the important role women have held in education and of the need to step forward to address issues in education to “Make it Happen – Make a Difference,” the theme of the convention.

Saturday afternoon, some of the members toured the Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley and also Tamarack.

At the Celebration Awards Banquet that evening, two members of Eta Chapter who served on state committees presented awards. Kathy Arbogast announced the recipient of the Alpha Phi State Scholarship and Linda Martin presented the 2016 Alpha Phi Achievement Award which she had won in 2015. The installation of the 2017-2019 Alpha Phi State Officers closed the evening.

Sunday morning at the final general session, Eta Chapter received Special Publications Awards of Excellence for its scrapbook, press book and newsletters. A ceremony of remembrance for those members who had passed during the biennium concluded the convention. Janice H. Kable, Carol Lantz, Eleanor Ann Shirley and Margaret C. Tabler from Eta Chapter were honored during this ceremony.

Those attending had the opportunity to learn more about the society and its purpose and have fellowship not only with the Eta members, but also of the members attending from across the state. The members attending from Eta Chapter were Arbogast, Rebecha Catlett, Mary Beth Cornell, Eleanor Effland, Peggy Grantham, Ann Hunter, Vicki Jenkins, Julia Linaweaver, Martin, Linda McGraw, Darlene Risinger, Lula Belle Robertson, Jay Russell, Cindy Woods and Kathy Yost.
