Local police recover abducted child

by Kate Shunney

Cpl. Samuel Smith of the West Virginia State Police last Tuesday recovered a five year old North Carolina girl from a woman who had allegedly taken the girl from her home by force.

Gloria Denise Barden, 25, of Avondale, Ga. was taken into custody without incident at the Berkeley Springs Sheetz on Valley Road shortly after 6:30 p.m. on May 9.

According to police, the Morgan County 911 was alerted by the Goldsboro, N.C. Police Department that Barden and the child were in Morgan County, possibly at the convenience store. Cpl. Smith arrived on scene and located the suspect and child outside the store.

Barden was taken into custody without incident and the child was transported to the Morgan County Sheriff's Department to await the arrival of family members from North Carolina.

Due to the length of travel time, the child's father arrived several hours later. Lt. Seth Place of the Sheriff's Department cared for the victim at his family home as police waited for the girl's family members to get to Berkeley Springs.

Barden was arraigned and taken to the Eastern Regional Jail, where she was held without bail, awaiting extradition to North Carolina on kidnapping charges, among other criminal offenses.

According to Cpl. Smith, Barden is the victim's mother but does not have legal custody of her.

There was an adult male and two other children in the vehicle with Barden when she was apprehended, said Lt. Place. Those children had not been reported missing and were left in the custody of the other adult in the vehiby cle.
