Qualifying for states tennis competition is, left to right: Trevor Nelson, Alec Martin and Ben Michael. What has already been a historic boy’s tennis season for Berkeley Springs High School just got even better after this past weekend’s Class AA Region I Tennis Championships.

In what was termed a grueling long two days with play ending at 11:45 p.m. Thursday, May 4 and starting once again Friday, May 5 at 7:45 a.m. and finally concluding on Saturday, May 6 at 1 a.m. Berkeley Springs was able to prevail.

Led by senior Trevor Nelson playing at the #2 singles and the #2 doubles team of senior Alec Martin and sophomore Ben Michael the Indians have three state qualifiers. What is even amazing is that the three are maybe the most Berkeley Springs has ever qualified in school history.

Nelson finished third in the regional tournament with some solid play at the nets. Martin and Michael finished as regional runner ups in the number two doubles competition.

The other members of both the boys and girls team also played well in the regional championships. In singles competition Martin, Dylan Carder, Caleb Stotler, Leah Reed and the doubles teams of Nelson/Carder and Matthew Rubeck all advanced to the championship quarterfinals. Despite not making it to the quarterfinals Berkeley Springs saw Dalas Carder, Natalie Hashem, the doubles team of Dalas Carder/Hashem and Reed/McKenna Maravelis all played well and posted close match scores.

“The players were all worn out, but played hard in each match they were in and I am quite proud of them all,” stated Berkeley Springs tennis coach Raynette Mock.

The Class AA State Tennis Championships will begin tomorrow, Thursday, May 11 in Charleston.
