Musselman rallies to top Lady Indians

by Jamie Harris

Berkeley Springs High School Lady Indians Softball Team ventured to Inwood for a game with Class AAA Musselman last Friday, April 28. Berkeley Springs was looking to even its final regular season record to 9-9, but instead saw Musselman rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a wild 10-9 win.

Both teams scored a run each in the first inning. In the third inning Berkeley Springs scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead. However in the bottom of the third Musselman rallied with three runs to go up 4-3.

The fourth inning was almost a mirror of the previous inning. Once again the Lady Indians score two runs to go up 5-4, however in the bottom of the fourth a rally by Musselman scored four runs to go up 8-5.

Both teams remained scoreless until the sixth inning when the Lady Indians scored four runs to go up 9-8. Two of those runs came on a home run blast by sophomore slugger Katie Hoffman. The bottom of the sixth saw the Lady Indians defense struggle as Musselman reclaimed the lead with two runs to go back up 10-9 for the win.

The Lady Indians were led by Hoffman (3-4, 2 singles, 2 run home run, run and 4 RBIs), Hannah High (3-4, 2 doubles, run and 2 RBIs), Ally Emery (3-4, 2 singles, double and 3 runs), Payton Brown (3- 4, 3 singles and run), Shyann Farris (2-4, 2 singles) and Taylor Stotler (2-3, 2 singles, run, and 2 RBIs). Courtney Stotler and Aleah Hagney also singles for Berkeley Springs.

“We are not in a very good position for the playoffs. Mentally, I get the impression that about half of the team don’t want to be there. We don’t have no enthusiasm or aggression. We are still hitting the ball extremely well, but our defense is falling apart. A lot of that is our pitchers are getting behind in the count to every batter. We had five errors and allowed four walks, that’s giving the other team nine extra outs to use. We are not nearly good enough to give the other team three extra innings to hit,” stated veteran Lady Indians head coach Greg Brown.

The Lady Indians were back in action with the start of the Class AA Sectional Quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 2. Berkeley Springs will host Philip Barbour at 5 p.m. If the Lady Indians win they will travel to Keyser on Wednesday, May 3 for a 5 p.m. game. If the Lady Indians were to win at Keyser they will travel to Petersburg for the Class AA Sectional Championship game which will start with a doubleheader on Thursday, May 4 starting at 4 p.m. The series with Petersburg will be the best two out of three and game three would be played on Friday, May 5 at Petersburg.
