Thompson captures WV Jr. State Championship Harris finishes as WV Jr. State Runner up and five more wrestlers place

This past weekend seven wrestlers from Berkeley Springs who are also members of the Warm Springs Wolves Middle School Team and a member of the Berkeley Springs Junior Indians wrestling program traveled to Parkersburg for the 40th WV Jr. State Championships. All eight of the wrestlers were seeded in the top eight of their respective weight classes and seven of those wrestlers went on to either capture a state championship or place in the top six.

Leading the way for the Berkeley Springs crew was seventh grader Evan Thompson who captured his first WV Jr. State wrestling championship with a dominating performance in the 11 and 12 year old 130 lb. weight class. Thompson who was seeded fourth in the division began his Saturday afternoon with a 16 second pin of #5 seed Brayden Huntley of Independence. In the championship semifinals Thompson beat #1 seed Noah Casto of Clay County by a 7-0 decision to advance to the finals. In the championship finals Thompson pinned #7 seed Matthew Holderby of Independence in :59 seconds.

Sixth grader Isaac Harris wrestling in the 11 & 12 year old 100 lb. weight class entered the WV Jr. State wrestling championships as the #3 seed. In the championship quarter finals Harris pinned Trent Thompson of Independence in 3:32. In the semifinals Harris faced #2 seed Hunter Brown of Ripley. In a barn burner of a match that saw the score tied at 5-5 at the end of regulation. In the sudden death overtime period Harris used a double leg takedown to secure the win advancing to the championship finals. In the finals Harris took on #1 seed Trent Jones of Edison. Jones was able to defeat Harris with a first period pin to capture the state championship.

Berkeley Springs also had several other wrestlers place in the top six of their respective weight classes. Fourth grader Daniel Clark came in as the #7 seed and had to fight back from a first round loss to capture fourth place in the nine and 10 year old 62 lb. weight class. Clark lost in the first round by a score of 6-4 to Jaclynne Welch. In the consolation round Clark drew a bye to advance to take on Zoey Windland and used an 8-5 decision to win. In the consolation quarterfinals Clark defeated Connor Lambert 12-9 to make it to medal round and the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semifinals Clark defeated #3 seed Maddox Hoffman with a pin at 3:33. In the third and fourth place match Clark saw his three match win streak stopped with a 7-0 loss to #5 seed Devin Fowler to finish in fourth place.

Eighth grader Landen Riggleman also placed fourth for Berkeley Springs in the 13- 15 year old 118 lb. weight class. Riggleman came into the event seeded #4 and was upset in the championship quarterfinals 6-4 by #5 seed Brayden Kimes. Riggleman then had a bye to the consolation quarterfinals where he faced David Cooper. Riggleman was able to secure a 4-1 decision to advance to the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semifinals Riggleman took on #7 seed Tyberious Clayton of Moorefield and picked up an impressive 5-2 decision. In the third and fourth place match Riggleman lost to Kimes again this time by a pin to finish in fourth place.

Eighth grader Tyler Clark wrestling in the 13-15 year old 137 lb. weight class finished in fifth place. Clark was seeded #4 in his weight class. Clark lost in the championship quarterfinals by a pin to #5 seed Carter King. In the consolation semifinals Clark lost to #3 seed Parker Young by a pin. In the fifth and sixth place match Clark received a bye to secure a fifth place finish.

Sixth grader Jackson Mundey wrestling in the 11 and 12 year old 69 lb. weight class was seeded #5 in the tournament. In the championship quarterfinals Mundey was pinned by #4 seed Fisher Fraddosio of Jefferson in 1:30. In the consolation semifinals Mundey lost to #3 seed Brent Bosley by a pin at 1:37. In the fifth and sixth place match Mundey received a bye to secure a fifth place finish.

Sixth grader Gabe Clark wrestling in the 11 and 12 year old 85 lb. weight class came into the tournament as a #8 seed. In the first round Clark pinned Brian Coulter of Oak Glenn in :29 seconds. In the championship quarterfinals Clark was pinned by #1 seed Cameron Irazarry in 26 seconds. In the consolation first round Clark received a forfeit to advance. In the consolation quarterfinals Clark pinned #5 seed Kendall Huffman in 3:00 to advance to the medal round and the consolation semifinals. In the consolation semifinals Clark lost to #3 seed Jack Atkinson by the score of 11-2. In the fifth and sixth place match Clark defeated #6 seed Lodan Hess of Ravenswood with a 26 second pin.
