A Paint Night Tonight to Benefit the Morgan County Backpack Program

Paint, enjoy and support child nutrition

A Paint Night to benefit the Morgan County Backpacks Program is scheduled for tonight, Friday, August 14 at 7 p.m.  This public event, hosted by Panorama at the Peak Restaurantis an opportunity to create a choice of two paintings with the support of Morgan County feature artists Janet Gauthier and Robert Howard from AnayaArt Studios.

Last year over 320 Morgan County students benefitted from the Backpack Program.  These students receive a small bag of child-friendly foods each Friday, which according to program helpers, is all some of the children get to eat between lunch on Friday at school and when they come back to school for breakfast on Monday.

Event coordinator Jenna Hansroth had heard of the Backpack Program before working as an Americorps VISTA for Camp MoCo this summer, but realized the importance and urgency when she really got to know the kidsand spent time volunteering at the Community Kitchen.

"The need for this program is real and growing.  When you have children asking for leftovers to take home you know they are hungry," Hansroth said.

She approached Panorama at the Peak Restaurant owners Patti Miller and Leslie Hotaling about hosting the event and Gauthier soon contacted her about donating their time.  Hansroth says they have intentionally kept event expenses at a minimum so that a larger amount of each participation fee can be donated to help fill the Backpack Program's shelves.

Miller and Hotaling also hope to increase the amount of money raised by offering to donate 10% from all receipts of those participants who come early to have dinner before the event.

"We all have to take care of these kids, because without enough to eat there is no way they can focus and achieve academically," Miller noted, "We, as a community, need to come together to make sure this program remains successful."

Reservations for the Paint Night event should be made through Panorama at the Peak Restaurant at 304-258-0050.  Tickets include all necessary art supplies.

Anyone unable to attend tonight's event can still support the Backpack Program by making a monetary or food donation.

Donations can be sent to Starting Points at 187 South Green Street, Suite 3 Berkeley Springs, WV 25411. Checks can be payable to Starting Points with "MC Backpacks" in the Memo line of your check so the money goes to the backpack program.
