A jury in Frederick County (Va.) Circuit Court found a Berkeley Springs man guilty of three felony charges following a weeklong trial in Winchester last week.
Joshua Michael Reed, 39, was convicted of child abuse by a parent resulting in injury, child cruelty that resulted in injury and malicious wounding. Reed inflicted the injuries on his daughter when the child was just a few months old, in April of 2021. He was living in Frederick County with the child’s mother at the time.
According to court reporting, the girl is now permanently blind and has developmental challenges. Medical experts testified about detecting multiple fractures in the child’s body when she was brought for treatment for a swollen and severely bruised eye.
The Winchester Star reported that the Virginia jury was unable to come to a consensus on a verdict for two charges stemming from a January 2021 incident of injury to the child.
The Star reported that Circuit Judge William W. Eldridge IV declared a mistrial on those charges because of the jury impasse. Prosecutors will reportedly revisit whether to retry Reed on those charges at a later date.
Reed is set to be sentenced on the three felony charges on May 30.
He remains incarcerated at the Northwestern Regional Adult Detention Center, where he has been jailed since his indictment in September of 2021.
