Naming rights to gym approved

by Geoff Fox

Jeffrey Spielman taught over 40 years in Washington County and was a long time coach at Hancock High School.

His name is etched in the Panther’s basketball record books and hearts of former players.

And now, his name will be forever more etched in Hancock Middle-Senior High School lore, as the gymnasium the Hancock Panthers basketball teams call home will be known as the Jeffrey Spielman Memorial Gymnasium.

Washington County Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the naming of the gym.

Board member Pieter Bickford said he appreciated the Hancock community for approaching the board about the naming of the gym after Spielman.

“It’s nice to be able to do something nice for the Hancock community,” Bickford said.

WCPS Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Prouix said over the last few months, the district had received correspondence and the results of an online petition done by the Hancock community to name the gym after Spielman.

The correspondence and online petition were dated September 24. The petition included nearly 1,100 signatures of community members supporting the renaming of the gym.
