Steven L. Silverman, 49, of Thurmont, Md., was indicted by a federal grand jury last Tuesday, July 23 
for the robbery of City National Bank in Berkeley Springs in June.
According to United States Attorney Bill Powell, Silverman is charged with one count of “Bank Robbery.” Silverman is accused of robbing the City National Bank of $1,730 on June 4.
Silverman faces up to 20 years incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberley D. Crockett is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government.
Berkeley Springs Police Chief T.J. Johnson testified before the federal grand jury last week. He was the lead investigator in the case and arrested Silverman on June 7 when the Maryland man returned to City National Bank three days after the robbery.
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Department assisted town police in the investigation and arrest.
According to the criminal complaint against Silverman at the time of his initial arrest, Silver entered the local bank along U.S. 522 and presented tellers with a note telling them to give him “all the money no die pack.” According to court records, Silverman’s note claimed someone had his son and they would kill him if bank tellers hit an alarm.
Tellers gave Silverman $1,730 in marked U.S. currency and he walked out the front door. Police believe he left the downtown area in a vehicle.
Police also believe Silverman may have been involved in a May 30 bank robbery in New Market, Md. The robber’s note in that case was very similar and his appearance matched that of Silverman, they said.
Silverman’s case will continue in federal court with a future arraignment. He is still being held at the Eastern Regional Jail.
