A crash in the early morning hours of Saturday claimed the life of the driver, who has yet to be publicly identified by police pending a positive ID by the State Medical Examiner.
On Saturday, August 15, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department responded to a traffic crash in the 9900 block of Martinsburg Road.
According to Sheriff Johnnie Walter, Deputy J. Burkholder arrived on the scene at 3:58 a.m. to find a Ford Explorer engulfed in flames.
“After the fire was extinguished a body was discovered in the vehicle,” the Sheriff said.
The deputy’s investigation indicates that the Explorer was traveling west on Martinsburg Road at a “high rate of speed” leading up to the crash, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway.
Sheriff Walter said his department has contacted the family of the victim, who is believed to be a 24 year old male from eastern Morgan County. He said his department won’t release the driver’s name until the Medical Examiner can release the identity pending a conclusive identification.
