Indians split busy week, improve to 4–13 on season

by Jamie Harris

The Berkeley Springs Indians baseball team showed steady progress and flashes of dominance during a demanding four-game stretch last week, picking up both a home and a road victory to improve to 4–13 on the season, despite a pair of tough road losses.

The week opened on Monday, April 13, with a road trip to East Hardy, where the Indians ran into a strong Cougars squad and fell 15–0. Defensive struggles proved costly for Berkeley Springs, as five fielding errors helped East Hardy build a commanding lead. Offensively, the Tribe managed just two hits, with Shawn McCumbee and Kyle Moore each collecting a single.

The tone shifted dramatically on Wednesday, April 15, when Berkeley Springs returned home to Morgan Field to host county rival Paw Paw. Behind a dominant pitching performance, the Indians shut out and no-hit the Pirates in a convincing 10–0 victory.

Caiden Groves set the pace on the mound, working three innings and striking out eight batters. He was followed by Liam Coffman, who tossed 1.2 innings with five strikeouts and Brendan Anderton, who closed the game with an inning of work and one strikeout. The trio did not allow a hit, showcasing the Indians’ depth and confidence on the mound.

Berkeley Springs’ offense matched the pitching excellence. Kyle Moore delivered a standout performance with a double, a triple and three runs scored. Groves helped his own cause with a triple, two runs and an RBI, while Jalen Miller added a single, a run and an RBI. Additional contributions came from McCumbee (single, run), Coffman (run), Seth Mowery (run) and Anderton (run, RBI), as the Indians capitalized on opportunities throughout the lineup.

Momentum carried into Thursday, April 16, as the Indians traveled to Grace Academy in Hagerstown, Md., and rolled to a 16–2 road victory. Kyle Moore was sharp on the mound, pitching five strong innings while striking out seven, allowing just three hits and two earned runs.

At the plate, Moore continued his big week with two doubles, a single and two runs scored. Jalen Miller drove in three runs while collecting two singles and scoring three times, and Coffman chipped in two singles, two runs and three RBIs. Matthew Slifer crossed the plate three times and added two singles, while Anderton contributed two singles, three RBIs and two runs. Wyatt Bartley (single, two runs, two RBIs), Colten Dixon (two RBIs), McCumbee (RBI) and Groves (run) rounded out a balanced offensive outburst.

The Indians closed the week on Friday, April 17, with another road contest, this time at Hampshire. Berkeley Springs struggled to generate offense and dropped a 10–0 decision to the Trojans. Moore led the Tribe with two singles, while Anderton and Groves also recorded base hits in the loss.

With the split week behind them, Berkeley Springs will look to build on the positives as the schedule remains busy in the coming days. The Indians (4–13) were set for a road game at Mountain Ridge on Monday, April 20 at 4:30 p.m., followed by a home contest against Hancock on Tuesday, April 21 at 6 p.m. They will then travel to Frankfort for a conference matchup on Wednesday, April 22 at 7 p.m., before returning home to host Hedgesville on Thursday, April 23 at 7 p.m. The week concludes with the Ron Clatterbuck Invitational on April 25, with opponents and times to be determined.

As the season enters its next phase, the Indians will look to carry forward their pitching strength and emerging offensive balance as they prepare for a challenging stretch of competition.
