Dee Slough Tribute

“Live Ferociously”

We remember and celebrate the life of Dee Slough, lovingly known as “The Honey Badger,” who went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 31.

At 73 years young, Dee lived with a spirit that was strong, joyful, and unmistakably full of life. She had a way of making people feel seen and cared for—through her laughter, her generosity, and her constant presence in the lives of those she loved.

Even in her final days, Dee lived fully. On her last day, she spent time with her family preparing a seafood feast—one worthy of celebration and approval by Gordon Ramsay—for her husband Jim’s 77th birthday. It reflected who she was: thoughtful, capable, and deeply devoted to her family.

Dee is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jim Slough; her daughters, Andria Slough and Stephanie Rebant; and her son-in-law, Ryan Rebant. To them, she was “the world’s greatest mom.” She was also an exceptional cook, a natural giver, and someone who instinctively met the needs of others—whether through a thoughtful gift, encouragement, or simply showing up at the right moment.

She brought light into every room. She laughed easily, loved adventure, and treasured time with her family—whether visiting Andria at Navy bases or traveling with her family. Dee didn’t just enjoy life; she leaned into it.

Her strength showed most clearly in how she cared for others. With both encouragement and honesty, she lifted people up and called them forward. After working as a teacher’s aide, Dee saw firsthand the challenges families faced. Drawing from her own difficult childhood, she was determined to help others build a better path.

In 1999, she helped pioneer the vacation rental industry in Berkeley Springs. What began as an opportunity became something much more. Dee created pathways for others—helping individuals gain skills, find work, and build stability for their families. Through her efforts, she didn’t just build a business; she strengthened a community.

Dee held herself—and others—to a high standard, always believing people were capable of more. She led with both conviction and compassion.

Her life was a gift. Her impact will continue in the lives she touched, the family she loved, and the community she helped shape.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
