Smith, Andrews & Close earn awards at State Science Fair

Students from all over West Virginia competed in the WV State Science and Engineering Fair at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center on Monday, March 9. A total of 227 students from 20 counties took part in the competition. In order to participate at the state level, students must have received a first-place award at both the county and regional levels.

Morgan County Schools was represented at the state fair by Caroline Andrews, Nathan Close, Waylon Smith, and Harper Thompson from Warm Springs Intermediate School, Tasha Ginevan from Paw Paw Elementary School, Caden McCumbee from Warm Springs Middle School, Abigail Close from Berkeley Springs High School, and Joselyn Smith from Paw Paw High School.

Out of the eight Morgan County Schools’ students who presented, three received top honors.

Caroline Andrews received a third-place award in Division I Animal Science for her project, “Whitetail Deer: Choice of Food.”

Joselyn Smith received a second-place award in Division III Translational Medical Sciences for her project, “Can AI Crack Cancer’s Code?”

Nathan Close received a first-place award in Division I Plant Science for his project, “Phototropism: aMAZE of Light.”
