The Berkeley Springs Indians wrestling team hit the mats hard over the holiday break, competing in two major tournaments: the Tom Lewis Classic at East Fairmont High School on Saturday, December 27, and the Coach Jim Potts Memorial Tournament at Cameron High School on January 3.
The Indians made a strong showing at the Tom Lewis Classic, finishing fifth overall out of 18 teams with 155 points. Williamstown claimed the team title with 216 points, followed by East Fairmont (162), St. Mary’s (160.5) and University (157.5).
Berkeley Springs crowned two individual champions:
Jacob Morgan (150) – The senior dominated his bracket, starting with an opening-round pin over Wheeling Central. He followed with a lightning-fast 34-second pin in the quarterfinals against Lewis County. Morgan earned a 9-5 decision over Williamstown in the semifinals before sealing the championship with a pin over Musselman’s Logan Smith in 3:30.
Kaiden Proctor (157) – The sophomore continued his breakout season, beginning with a pin over Greenbrier East. He then scored a 17-1 tech fall against Doddridge County, edged Wheeling Central 4-2 in the quarters, and defeated University 3-1 in the semis. In the finals, Proctor outlasted Williamstown’s Wesley Freed 7-4 for the title.
Other top finishers for the Indians: 106: Ashton Henry – 3rd place, 113: Eligah Parsell – 2nd place, 126: Vaughn Taylor – 3rd place and 144: Kowen Proctor – 3rd place.
The Indians traveled to Cameron High School on January 3 for the Coach Jim Potts Memorial Tournament, finishing third out of 17 teams with 168.5 points. Independence (223.5) and Oak Glen (203.5) claimed the top two spots.
Berkeley Springs had one individual champion:
Kaiden Proctor (157) – Proctor continued his winning ways, capturing his second straight tournament title.
Other notable finishes: 106: Ashton Henry – 3rd place, 113: Eligah Parsell – 2nd place, 126: Vaughn Taylor – 3rd place, 144: Kowen Proctor – 3rd place, 150: Jacob Morgan – 2nd place, 165: Trent Fox – 3rd place and 175: Garrin Place – 3rd place.
The Indians return to action on Saturday, January 10, at Keyser High School for the Class AA Region II Dual Qualifier. Berkeley Springs will face East Hardy, Moorefield and host Keyser, battling for the top two spots to advance to the WV State Dual Championships later this season. Wrestling begins at 5 p.m.
