A semi-annual student award ceremony was held by the Morgan County Board of Education on Tuesday, December 2 at Berkeley Springs High School, recognizing high student scores on state and national standardized tests and other academic and sports achievements.
The high school auditorium was full of students and their families, leading school board members to remark on the “teamwork” required for students to be successful on their tests, in their studies and in life.
“It was wonderful to sign as many awards as we did for tonight,” said school board president Aaron Close.
“We had some of the largest growth in reading and math scores in the state,” Close told families. “You students pushed us up a notch.”
School board member John Rowland, before presenting several awards, reiterated that student success is a team effort of young people, families, teachers, coaches and school staff.
“There’s no easy way to bone up on these standardized tests. You just have to keep getting better every day and that’s what we’re doing,” Rowland said.
School board member Chuck Bergen said that, as a parent, he understands how much goes into supporting students for testing, school projects and even daily school demands.
Superintendent David Banks wrapped up the awards by reminding students that their potential is unlimited.
“There is no reason to believe anyone in this room can’t succeed at anything in life they want to,” he said. “There’s nothing we can’t do.”
He asked students to thank the adults in their lives who offer help and guidance, whether a parent or aunt or older sibling.
Students who attained the highest level of achievement in at least two of three subjects on the West Virginia General Summative Assessment Test last year were honored. They included:
