Apple Scones for Apple Butter Week
My Great-Grandmother, Arizona Henry, cherished the Apple Butter Festival. Each year, we gather for our Annual Apple Butter Thanksgiving dinner, a special meal that draws family in mostly from Edgewater, Maryland. We spend the day at the festival, soaking in the sights, smells, and sounds, before returning home to a feast, a twist on the traditional Thanksgiving meal timed to coincide with the festival. The freshly made apple butter from the festival, when added to homemade bread, is a tasty annual addition to our meal.
I have been preparing this special meal in honor of my Grandma Zona for 30 years now. All our family still comes on Friday night of the Apple Butter Festival. We stay up all night talking, sharing stories, and gossiping before heading to the parade first thing Saturday morning. It is always such a great time of year.
Don’t forget to visit the festival’s apple booth and pick up a few Honeycrisp apples, my personal favorite for both snacking and cooking. These apples are juicier and crunchier than others, making them a perfect choice for any dish. Additionally, they’re a healthy and nutritious snack, rich in energy and fiber. So, grab your apples at the festival this year and enjoy a healthy treat while creating your own family traditions and memories.
Apple Scones
2 cups of flour
1/3 cup of sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. baking soda
1 ½ tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1 cup Honeycrisp apple, shredded
½ cup milk
½ cup powdered sugar
Combine all dry ingredients, cutting them into the butter. Then knead in the shredded apples until a sticky ball forms. Divide the ball and flatten into 6” circle that’s ¾” thick, placing them on a well-greased baking sheet in a 425-degree oven for 15-20 minutes.
