Paw Paw Lady Pirates Volleyball set for exciting season under veteran coach

by Jamie Harris

As the 2025 volleyball season approaches, the Paw Paw Lady Pirates are ready to make waves on the court, led by longtime head coach Holly Palmer. This year’s campaign is extra special, marking the 35th anniversary of Paw Paw volleyball, a milestone that promises thrilling matches, fierce competition and plenty of moments that capture the spirit of high school athletics.

Returning to the floor are five key players who will anchor the team with skill, experience and leadership. Seniors Shayla Tanouye and Lydia Ross lead the charge, with Tanouye coming off a remarkable spring season as Paw Paw’s state track and field champion in two events. Juniors Kyndal Corbett and Abby Williams provide firepower and finesse, while sophomore Sarah Thorne strengthens the back row.

Joining the returning players are new faces ready to make their mark. Seniors Alexis Kidwell and Grace Deschenes, along with sophomore Sophia Ross, bring previous playing experience and versatility to the roster. Freshmen Nikki Dick and Betty Jo Newlon are showing steady improvement in practice and are expected to contribute as the season progresses.

Coach Palmer notes, “I love the determination and attitudes of the girls. They have set some high standards for themselves.” With five returning players filling crucial roles—Shayla and Kyndal as outside hitters, Abby as setter, and Lydia and Sarah anchoring the back row—the team is poised to combine talent and teamwork to compete at a high level. Alexis, Grace, and Sophia offer valuable support in multiple positions, while the freshman duo adds fresh energy and promise.

On September 5, Paw Paw Schools will dedicate the new scorekeepers’ table in memory of Mr. Palmer, a fitting tribute to a man who has given so much to the program and also Paw Paw athletics. Time for the dedication is yet to be announced, but fans are encouraged to attend and show support.

With dedication, talent, and heart, the 2025 Paw Paw Lady Pirates are ready to serve, spike and set the tone for a volleyball season to remember.
