April 21, 1944-June 3, 2025
Rob Campbell, 81, was a man of service. At a young age he served in the United States Navy. More recently, he was the Morgan County Sanitarian, ensuring that restaurants, and restaurant workers knew how to store, prepare and serve food in a safe manner, protecting Morgan Countians.
He was a voracious reader. A fan of the moving picture, he was always ready to talk about what films inspired him. He enjoyed having coffee with friends in the morning, and Mexican food in the evening. A man of many skills, he was handy with a set of golf clubs, or a set of woodworking tools.
Rob had a degree in fluid and aerospace mechanical engineering and before moving to Berkeley Springs he worked as an engineer in a Maryland firm. He was known to often develop pages of mathematical formula to figure out an engineering problem, both at work and at home.
Rob loved horses and Border Collies. He had owned several Quarterhorses and was very good at training the foals.
Rob was always politically active. He was in Mississippi in 1964 when he was 19 or 20 to help register black voters when the three civil rights activists, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner were murdered.
In 2024 he was recognized as the Morgan County Outstanding Democrat of the Year.
Rob had a large and loving family, both in Dayton, Ohio and Maryland, and he was very close to them. Family holidays were major and very special events. His uncle was head of the drama department at the University of Maryland and Rob attended many of the after-play cast parties, some students later became famous, notably Goldie Hawn.
He is survived by one brother, Doug Campbell and his wife Jeannie of Dayton, Ohio, and many cousins, step-children, nieces and nephews in Ohio and in Maryland.
An informal memorial will be held as part of the West Virginia Day Celebration at Cacapon State Park, Nature Center Pavilion, Thursday, June 19 at 5:30 p.m. This is a potluck dinner sponsored by the Morgan County Democratic Party. Attendees are encouraged to bring a food item to share. All are welcome.
