Indians Baseball struggles in opening week

by Jamie Harris

The Berkeley Springs High School Indians baseball team has faced a tough start to their 2025 season, dropping their first three games against formidable opponents.

On Wednesday, March 19, the Indians traveled to Class AAA powerhouse Jefferson High School, where the Cougars shut out the Tribe 11-0. Berkeley Springs struggled to generate offense, managing only a single hit from Shawn McCumbee.

The challenges continued on Friday, March 21, as the Indians squared off against the Allegany Campers in a trip to Cumberland, Md. The Campers’ pitching staff dominated the game, no-hitting Berkeley Springs in a four-inning contest, securing another shutout loss for the Indians.

Looking to rebound at home on Saturday, March 22, the Indians hosted the Class A A A Martinsburg Bulldogs at Morgan Field. Martinsburg took control early, building a 6-1 lead after three innings and cruising to a 15-1 victory. The Indians mustered just two hits from Kyle Rankin and Jaxon McClintock, while Jayden Michael provided the only run.

Now sitting at 0-3, Berkeley Springs looks ahead to a critical stretch of games in hopes of turning their season around. Their upcoming schedule is as follows: Monday, March 24 at Hancock, 4:45 p.m.; Wednesday, March 26 against Mountain Ridge, 7 p.m.; Thursday, March 27 at Hedgesville, 7 p.m.; Friday, March 28 against Chestnut Ridge, 7 p.m.

The Indians will aim to bounce back and find their rhythm as they continue their early-season schedule.
