Hancock gallery will open new photo exhibit Saturday

A new exhibition at Off-70 studio Entitled “Strata” will open Saturday, March 29 and be up until May 3. The works featured in the exhibition were inspired by the landscape of Hancock and will explore notions of “Strata.”

The artworks are made by several artists from the artist collective Cultivate, an evolving collection of interdisciplinary artists, writers, and researchers driven by investigations of land, place, and the commons.

Projects include experimental and practical art explorations that wrestle with the qualities, perceptions, and layers of experience that inform and expand notions of landscape.

A compilation of historic and contemporary photographs of the C&O Canal are part of Murat Cen Mengüç’s interactive site specific installation “pathways (and parameters),” presented in the window of Off-70.

Various artistic practices represented include hand-made paper, painting, video, photography, drawing and installation works. The artists from Cultivate include Maggie Gourlay, Katie Kehoe, Susan Main, Caire McConaughy, Murat Cen Mengüç, MJ Neuberger, Elzbieta Sikorska, and Sue Wrbican.

The opening for the event is 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 29 and will feature poetry read and written by architect and historian David Abruzzi and poet/writer Chrissy Alhart. The public is welcome to attend the opening at 39 West Main St. Hancock.
