Structure fire injures Largent resident

by Kate Evans

A structure fire Monday night in the Hampshire County area of Largent resulted in  a burn victim being flown out from Great Cacapon for medical care. The 911 call for the structure fire came in at 11:19 p.m. for William Demoss Road in Largent, said Hampshire County 911 Custodian of Records Captain Jamie Carter.

Carter said that the structure fire originally came in as a garage fire.  One of the residents called the fire in to 911, saying a building — a garage — was on fire near a residence.  When firefighters first arrived on the scene, the garage fire was fully involved and the fire had spread to the residence.  Carter said that propane tanks were exploding inside the garage.

Morgan County units were requested for mutual aid with the structure fire and to set up a landing zone for the helicopter for a burn patient.  The Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Department established the medivac  landing zone for Trooper 5 at the ballfield in Great Cacapon, said Carter.  The burn victim was taken to Bayview Burn Center in Baltimore.

Carter said that there were no other injuries at the fire. Slanesville Volunteer Fire Company Chief Jared Shaffer was in command of the fire scene

Fire and rescue units that responded to the Largent structure fire included Hampshire County units from Augusta, Slanesville, Capon Bridge, Hampshire County Emergency Medical Services and the Augusta Rescue Unit. Morgan County units from Paw Paw, Great Cacapon and Morgan County Emergency Medical Services Medic Unit 7-8 also responded.
