This past Saturday, February 22 the Berkeley Springs Indians wrestling team was ready for action in the Class A/AA Region I Championships held at St. Mary’s High School.

Going into the event the Indians were one of the favored teams to possibly win the regional team title along with Keyser and Oak Glen. Along with that, the Tribe would need its grapplers to finish in the top four of their respective weight classes to qualify for the state wrestling championships in Huntington in two weeks.

When the dust settled at the end of the day it was Keyser who derailed the Indians for the regional team championships. The Golden Tornado scored 199 points to outdistance Berkeley Springs (184.5) and Oak Glen (179.5). Berkeley Springs was able to get three wrestlers into the championship finals, junior Eligah Parsell (113), senior Kollin Sullivan (165) and senior Krystian Norris (190).

However, only Parsell was able to capture his first regional title with a pin at 5:10 over #1 seed Aidan Anderson (Oak Glen).

Parsell was able to get to the finals by picking up an upset win 10-7 over Keyser’s Kaydan Durr. Durr had beaten Parsell twice in regular season by pin and a tech fall.

Sullivan lost by pin at the 5:22 mark to East Fairmont’s Tony Preolitti who is the #1 ranked wrestler in the state. Norris lost a 7-1 decision to Oak Glen’s Greg Sauers.

Five other Indian wrestlers also punched their ticket to the state championships with their top four placements. Freshman Vaughn Taylor (third place, 120), senior Daniel Clark (third place, 126), freshman Kaiden Proctor (fourth place, 150), junior Garrin Place (fourth place, 175) and senior Remi Sites (third place, 285).

Three other Indian wrestlers finished in fifth place and will be considered as alternates if any wrestler from their region and weight class cannot compete at the state tournament. Freshman Kowen Proctor (fifth place, 138), junior Trent Fox (fifth place, 144) and senior Aiden Cain (fifth place, 157).

Next up for the Berkeley Springs wrestlers is the Class A/AA State Wrestling Championships in Huntington on March 6, 7 and 8. The Lady Indians wrestlers will also be participating in the state championships on Saturday, March 8.
