Indians split games with Broadfording and Paw Paw

The Berkeley Springs Indians basketball team had an up-and-down week, finishing 1-1 in their two home games.

On Monday, February 10, the Indians hosted Broadfording Academy from Hagerstown, Md. The visiting Lions came out strong, jumping to a 21-12 lead after the first quarter and extending their advantage to 39-21 at halftime. Despite a competitive third quarter that saw the Indians cut into the deficit, Broadfording maintained control and secured a 70-52 victory.

Berkeley Springs had a balanced scoring effort led by Landen Schetrompf with 13 points. Brennan Hoover added 11 points, while Joe Houdersheldt contributed 8 points. Bethel George (6 points), Kyle Moore (5 points), Jake Aulabaugh (4 points), Jackson Ambrose (3 points) and Landon Stotler (2 points) rounded out the scoring for the Indians.

On Friday, February 14, the Indians hosted county rival Paw Paw in a rare regular-season matchup. What was expected to be an offensive showdown turned into a defensive battle, with both teams playing tough, physical basketball. Berkeley Springs held a slim 10-9 lead after the first quarter and edged out an 11-10 second quarter to take a 21-17 advantage into half- time.

The Pirates fought back in the third, outscoring the Indians 9-8 to make it a 29-26 game heading into the final period. However, the Indians found their rhythm late, using a 13-8 fourth-quarter run to pull away for a 42-34 victory.

Landen Schetrompf led the way with 9 points for Berkeley Springs, while Bethel George chipped in 7 points. Brennan Hoover contributed 6 points and grabbed 9 re- bounds, while Jake Aulabaugh and Joe Houdersheldt each scored 4 points, with Houdersheldt also securing a team-high 13 rebounds. Jayden Michael added 2 points and 5 rebounds and Landon Stotler was a force on the boards with 9 rebounds.

Paw Paw was led by senior Donnie Tanouye, who poured in a game-high 20 points. Braylin Paul added 8 points, while Nathan Dick (3 points), RJ Ryan (2 points) and Taylor Carder (1 point) rounded out the Pirates’ scoring.

Berkeley Springs (8-9) now looks ahead to two more home game. They faced Clear Spring, Md., on Tuesday, February 18, followed by a matchup with the Hancock Panthers on Friday, February 21. Junior varsity games begin at 6 p.m., with varsity action set for 7:30 p.m.
