An investigation by the West Virginia State Fire Marshal into the cause of a January 26 blaze that destroyed the Treetop House at Coolfont Resort has been completed and the scene has been turned over to the insurance company and the Omps family, owners of the property.
Jason Baltic, Chief Investigator and Deputy State Fire Marshal, told The Morgan Messenger in an email, “The fire is undetermined in cause due to the severity of the damage.”
By the time firefighters arrived on the fire scene, just minutes after a smoke investigation call, all three stories of the wooden lodge building were on fire.
Not long into firefighting operations, the center building of the complex collapsed into the basement.
Baltic didn’t supply any estimate for financial loss in the fire. The building is a total loss.
Coolfont owners have said they intend to rebuild the Treetop House in the future. They plan to reopen their vacation rental operations and recreation offerings in late February after some adjustments at the resort.
