Virginia Kay Poffinberger
1955-2025
Kay passed from this earth on the morning of January 31st 2025. She was a beloved wife of 48 years, a sister, a mother, grand & great grandmother who loved all her many animals and the little ones which would bring her joy and love. She desired to have them around her always. Kay was the first daughter to the late Florine Faircloth and Leroy Edwards. Leroy, being a widower, had Gwendolyn and Eleanor from his first marriage and this new marriage produced a large family of Jim, Roger and David Edwards, Kay, Carolyn Swartwood, Tina and Stephanie. When Florine married again to Norman Bowers, the family became even bigger. They gained the step brothers and sisters of Jack, Debora, Sheila, Kim and Norman “Bub” the II into the family Kay was preceded in death by her Mom, Dad, Step-Dad, sisters, Tina and Stephanie, brothers, Roger and David and grandson Tyler.
Kay married on September 2nd of 1977 to Randy Ray Poffinberger (Preacher) of Berkeley Springs and they began their new family, raising four children, Angela D. Jackson (Joe) of Charles Town, Katrina R. Fraley of Inwood, Shannon R. Thompson (Jarrod) of Falling Waters and Randy R. Poffinberger II (Sheree) of Berkeley Springs. And like most families it continued to grow bigger. Angela had two sons, Tristen (Hannah) of Charles Town who has two daughters, Sinclair and Kendra, and her other son, Logan (Breauna) with their son Oliver. Katrina had three more children to add to the mix, a son, Tyler, daughters, Madison and Morgan. Recently Randy the II (Sheree) had Kay’s newest grandson, Matthew Elijah. By marriage she gained a new brother-in-law, Lee and sister-in-law, Brenda Clark (Jim).
How she did like to cook. Over the long years she worked at Valley View Nursing Home, Sheetz, when it was in town, Mountain State Restaurant, Mountainside Restaurant and she spent a lot of time working for Georgie’s Pizza, Pasta and More, The Country Inn, Shawnee Springs, Liberty, both Dad’s Restaurants in Winchester and Front Royal, Wendy’s at Stephen City, KFC at Inwood and finished working at the Martinsburg Walmart and likely many more which elude my thoughts now. Like we said, she liked to cook, which she got from her Mom, who loved to cook. No one left the house hungry regardless how much food was actually in the house to share.
Over the years many family and non-family members were invited to stay at her home to find a place of comfort, understanding and support when it was needed.
To feel so much and to have so much to say and to have so little space to say it. Her health at the end was in decline. She had COPD for some time, slowly taking her air away. Kay survived having breast cancer from 20 years ago, having one breast removed at the time. More recently she had been diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s. Perhaps the last straw was finding out the day before she died that she may have cancer forming in her other breast.
In her retired days she found comfort in cooking for her family and spending time with her grand and great grandchildren. We had always lived with our “critters.” She loved to check on her pigs, talk with the chickens, and most of all she loved to sit and watch her goats. They really were the best therapy to bring peace and joy near the end. Watch the goats. Of course, she always had her cats and dogs. Her aging Chihuahua, Princess, will never understand her passing.
She is to be cremated at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center here in Berkeley Springs.
Memorial Services are scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd at the Berkeley Springs Church of Christ, 290 South Green Street, Berkeley Springs at 3 p.m. with Minister Joshua Hetrick officiating. Family and friends of Kay are welcome to come and share in one last fellowship of food and love with each other. There will be food provided downstairs in the church social hall following the services.
God is all wise, God is all knowing – and God in His wisdom had decided the time was right to bring our loved one home. Blessed be our loving God and Father. We know God will always do what is right. Amen.
