School committees get facilities projects & sports updates

by Kate Evans

The Morgan County Schools Buildings and Grounds Committee and Athletic Committee both met last quarter and received updates on various county school facilities projects and fall and winter sports,  according to their meeting minutes.

Buildings and grounds

The Warm Springs Middle School, Warm Springs Intermediate School and Berkeley Springs High School Building A roof replacement project that was submitted as a NEEDS project to the School Building Authority was not approved.

Assistant Superintendent Jeromy Duelley had talked to buildings and grounds committee members at their meeting about the NEEDS project submission.  Duelley said in an email to The Morgan Messenger that they “are collaborating with their architects to determine the next steps for those roof replacements,” after funding didn’t come through.

The Berkeley Springs High School Cafeteria heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) replacement and Widmyer Elementary HVAC replacement projects were also discussed at the meeting.  The two HVAC replacement projects are being treated as separate projects, Duelley said.

They have received bids for the Berkeley Springs High School cafeteria rooftop HVAC and will have this information in the next board meeting agenda, Duelley said.  The goal is to have the high school cafeteria unit replaced by this spring.

The Widmyer Elementary HVAC replacement will be a summer project, Duelley said. They are working with the architects to begin the bid process.

Other

Technology Director Tom Shade updated the buildings and grounds committee on the camera replacement project.  The project is being funded by a Homeland Security Grant, Assistant Superintendent Duelley said.

Duelley told the committee that they were getting quotes to replace the concrete steps at the front of Paw Paw High School.  They are also working to install a sidewalk in Widmyer Elementary’s north playground.

Warm Springs Intermediate School Principal Rebecca Huber reported that she had met with the Rotary Club about her playground fundraising progress.  Duelley said that the playground project is in its initial stages.  The intermediate school has met with Playground Specialist to discuss design concepts.

Duelley and Transportation Director Tammy Painter also went over reports from GoFMX concerning preventative maintenance and work orders at the meeting.

Athletic fields

Assistant Superintendent Duelley updated the athletics committee on the progress of the athletic fields groundskeeper position, according to their meeting minutes.  Duelley told The Morgan Messenger that the position has been approved.  They’ll be posting it when the mowing contract is renewed.
