James E. “Jim” Mahan III
1944-2025
James (Jim) Edward Mahan III, 80, of Winchester, Va., who retired in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., passed away peacefully with family by his side on Thursday, January 16, 2025 at The Village at Orchard Ridge Assisted Living in Winchester, Va.
Jim was born on March 18, 1944, in Wilmington, Del., the son of Lee R. and Alice Purdy Mahan and the oldest of six children.
Jim graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in Wilmington, Del. and went on to major in business at Union Commonwealth University (Formerly Union College) in Barbourville, Ky. and later retired from Federal Express.
Jim married his beloved wife Jeri E. Kinkade in June 1966, in Wilmington, Del. They enjoyed riding bikes, dancing, gardening and camping. They spent many years traveling across the country, visiting the National Parks, and all 50 states. They also loved wintering in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
Jim was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He spent many hours on his John Deere tractor or in his deer stand. He often shared his passions with his grandchildren.
Surviving Jim are his wife Jeri and their two daughters Holly Stenger (spouse Monte) of Charleston, SC, and Tamara Cursey (spouse Douglas) of Ellicott City, MD. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Meagan Stenger, Kristen Stenger, Ryan Cursey, Ashley Cursey, and Lauren Ratliff and five siblings Bill Mahan, Robert (Bob) Mahan, Jon Mahan, Lee Mahan, Betsy Pyle and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at Union Chapel United Methodist Church, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. on Saturday January 25, 2025 at 11 a.m. Officiating will be Pastor Mike Leedom. Inurnment will be held directly after in the church cemetery.
