Morgan County Commissioners on November 20 approved the hire of Nevin Camp as the Morgan County Facilities Director. Camp will replace Randy Stotler, who retired after eight years in the position. Camp took the post on November 11 as full-time facilities director at a pay of $42,000 with benefits.
County cybersafety training
The county’s IT director got commission approval to proceed with mandatory training on phishing and scamware hazards for users of all county email accounts. Scott Bier said there are an increasing number of risks to computer and network security, and an annual training for courthouse employees and others should help curb those.
“With all the people in the courthouse, it only takes one to send out an email with a link and suddenly it’s behind our firewalls,” Bier told commissioners.
Training through the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) will begin in 2025. Bier said the training is free and employees can complete it during their work time.
Bier said the county has information it must protect. He oversees nearly 200 county email accounts.
“Saying ‘I’m not a computer person’ doesn’t wash anymore. It’s 2024,” Bier said. “We’re going to have to start turning the ship slowly,” he said of new security efforts.
Bier reminded commissioners that multi-factor authentication for courthouse accounts were to go into effect on November 25.
Commission President Sean Forney agreed the county needs to implement training and new security efforts.
“It’s simple stuff and we need to be doing this,” said Forney.
