The Berkeley Springs Lady Indians soccer team had a rollercoaster week as they played two critical matches that will help determine sectional seeding. On Tuesday, October 15, the Lady Indians traveled to Keyser for a key sectional matchup, but despite a valiant effort, they fell to the Golden Tornado 3-1.
Keyser started strong, catching Berkeley Springs off guard with an early goal that set the pace for the game. The Lady Indians found themselves trailing 2-0 at halftime. However, they regrouped, and Albani Cirigliano found the back of the net with a long ball, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and giving the team a spark. Despite the rally, Keyser added a third goal to seal the game and claim the 3-1 win.
Berkeley Springs goal-keeper Katie Risinger was a force in goal, making 23 saves over 80 minutes of action, while shots on goal were recorded by Cirigliano (2), Abigail Close (1), Circe Pow- ell (1) and Lilli Stevens (1). Despite the loss, the Lady Indians showed resilience and a determination that would carry over into their next match.
On Wednesday, October 16, the Lady Indians returned to Morgan Field for their final home game of the season against the Frankfort Falcons.
With seniors Delilah Rhoten and Tenacious Ray taking the field for their last regular season game, Berkeley Springs came out with fire, dominating the Falcons in an 8-2 victory.
Albani Cirigliano led the way with a hat trick, including one goal assisted by Circe Powell. Taylor Andrews made her mark with a boom- ing 40-yard shot that found the back of the net, while Abigail Close continued her stellar freshman campaign by adding another goal. Ally Norcross also made the moment count, scoring her first high school goal.
Willow Rhoten, in goal, had 19 saves over the full 80 minutes of play, keeping Frankfort at bay.
With an 8-2 win and their regular season complete, the Lady Indians (4-9-1) now turn their attention to the sectional playoffs, where they will face a familiar foe.
On Tuesday, October 22, they took on Keyser in the first round of the sectional tournament. Keyser narrowly defeated Berkeley Springs twice during the season, but the Lady Indians are determined to turn the tables in this crucial matchup.
