Berkeley Springs stumbles against Hampshire, prepares for homecoming battle

by Jamie Harris

This past Friday night, October 18, the Berkeley Springs Indians headed to Romney, to face the Hampshire Trojans, hoping to secure a much-needed win. Coming into the game with a 2-4 record, the Indians were aiming to add another victory to their season, with aspirations of using it as a springboard for the remaining weeks of the season. Unfortunately for Berkeley Springs, Hampshire was well-prepared and ready to unleash its offensive firepower, delivering a decisive blow to the Indians by halftime.

Hampshire struck early and never let up, leading Berkeley Springs 10-0 after the first quarter. The Trojans’ attack continued to dismantle the Indians’ defense, and by halftime, Hampshire had extended their lead to 31-7. Berkeley Springs struggled to get anything going offensively or defensively and was simply outmatched by Hampshire’s relentless pressure.

Senior quarterback Aiden Cain provided a bright spot for the Indians. Cain completed 11 of 23 passes for 160 yards, including a touchdown, but the offensive production was too little, too late. The Indians couldn’t generate the consistent drives needed to keep up with Hampshire’s potent offense. The Trojans’ defense also held the Indians in check for most of the night, limiting their big plays and capitalizing on turnovers. Kicker DJ Hinckle was perfect on his only extra point attempt.

Defensively, Berkeley Springs struggled to contain the Trojan attack. Hampshire was able to score early and often, putting the Indians in a hole that they could not climb out of. The Trojans’ mix of passing and rushing kept the Indians on their heels, and by the time the final whistle blew, the score stood at 45-7 in favor of Hampshire.

Now sitting at 2-5, the Indians must regroup quickly as they prepare for their next challenge. Things won’t get any easier for Berkeley Springs this coming

Friday when they host the undefeated Frankfort Falcons, the hottest team in Class A A football. Frankfort is currently ranked #1 and has been dominant throughout the season, boasting a high- powered offense and a stifling defense.

However, despite the daunting task ahead, this week is Homecoming for Berkeley Springs. The excitement and energy around the school could provide a much-needed boost for the Indians as they look to pull off a major upset in front of their home crowd. Head coach Wes Eddy will have his team prepared for battle, knowing that they will need to execute on both sides of the ball to have a chance against a powerhouse like Frankfort.

While the odds may be stacked against them, the Indians are determined to put up a fight and make the most of the Homecoming festivities. Kickoff is set for Friday night, October 25, at 7 p.m.
