Larry S. James, Sr.

1949-2024

On Saturday, September 14, 2024, we lost our beloved Larry S. James, Sr. to a sudden stroke.

He was born September 16, 1949, the son of the late George and Dorothy James and will join them, along with his late mother-in-law, H. Lee Snyder and loyal dogs Thor and Leo.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Md. of Cherokee and Irish/Scot descent, he was a son, father, grandfather and loving husband.

Survived by his beautiful wife of 35 years Jan Walker. His sons, Larry S. James, Jr. (Kim) and Steven James (Jennifer) and grandson Colten James.

Being a survivor of the Vietnam War, Larry proudly served in the Army for his country, with honors. He lived with his wife and dogs in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. for 34 years after being in Baltimore, Md. He worked and retired from Solenberger’s Hardware Store in Winchester, Va.

He had a strong work ethic, rarely taking off a day which led him to being dependable, reliable, honest, humble and prideful.

Having a joyful attitude and a constant sense of humor brought him to many conversations. He loved to talk!

Larry had several “passions” throughout his lifetime. Harley Davidson Motorcycles! He loved to ride so much that even a catastrophic accident he had in South Dakota didn’t keep him away from riding. Once he recovered, he was back in the saddle of a new Harley Trike. He would take yearly 4 day rides with his son, Larry, Jr., best friend, John Everett and several others to “feel the wind in his soul.”

Larry was a percussionist musician – another passion! Music!! He loved playing drums, the louder the better. Classic Rock & Native American music was his favorite to listen to.

Another past-time Larry treasured was sitting on his and Jan’s deck watching the wildlife, especially the hummingbirds. They enjoyed card games and watching movies together.

He welcomed Jan’s “Sister’s of the Light” circle into his heart and home for decades and considered them his family.

Larry had his own philosophy about life. Expressing to Jan and John many times, “If tomorrow is my last day on Earth, I’ve had a good life” and “We live on borrowed time. Make the best of each day. I’m a simple man and I feel blessed.”

Larry S. James, Sr. will be missed by so many. He was very loved and gave so much love back. Until we meet again.

A “Celebration of Life” will be planned at a later date.

Thank you for sharing your life with us Larry.
