About eight tons of white sand was added recently to the run in Berkeley Springs State Park after removing algae and moss by the Berkeley Springs Water Works, the town-owned water department.
The donated sand was from U.S. Silica and the process should be finished soon, said Rick Mayhew, Water Superintendent.
No foreign water and no chemicals were used in the process that would contaminate the run, he said. Sump pumps were used and the algae and moss were collected in nets — about “four buckets worth.”
Over time, the algae and moss will grow back, so it needs to be taken care of early, he said.
“It was a challenge,” Mayhew said on Friday.
Public water for the Berkeley Springs area comes from that run, which is fed by the warm springs in the park.
