Paw Paw Pirates Track stand out PVC and Mountaineer Open

This past week was one for the memory books for the Paw Paw Pirates track and field program. With two meets, which included the PVC Championship and the ever so challenging Mountaineer Open the Pirates showed that small, can also be mighty.

On Wednesday, April 24, Paw Paw traveled to East Hardy High School for the 2024 Division II Championships. The Pirates came ready to compete and stand out was one thing that they did.

The Lady Pirates led by long jump PVC champion Miah Smith (14’ 8 1⁄2”) finished in fourth place out of seven teams. Host East Hardy (152), Tucker County (116), Petersburg (116) and Paw Paw (77) rounded out the top four teams.

Besides the long jump title, Smith finished in third place in the high jump with a height of 4’2”. Lady Pirates were led by Shayla Tanouye (third place, 100 meters, 13.95, fifth place, 400 meters, 1:07, sec- ond place, high jump, 4’10”, and second place, long jump, 14’3”), Pricilla Corbin (fourth place, 200 meters, 29.72 and fourth place, long jump, 13’5 1⁄2”), Joselyn Smith (second place, shot put, 28’ 5” and third place, discus, 90’10”), Myley Mullins (fourth place, shot put, 27’7”) and Alexis Kidwell (sixth place, shot put, 23’7”).

On the boy’ s side the Pirates were led by PVC 800 meter and long jump cham- pion Donnie Tanouye. Tanouye won the 800 meters (2:11) and long jump (19’4 1⁄2”) in dominating fashion. Also placing for Paw Paw were the following: Dreden Heath (sixth place, 200 meters, 26.08), RJ Ryan (sixth place, 400 meters, 58.75), Nathan Dick (fourth place, shot put, 35’01”), Ayden Crabtree (sixth place, shot put, 32’8”, second place, discus, 117’3 1⁄2”, and sixth place, long jump, 16’2 1⁄2”).

This past Saturday, April 27 the Pirates traveled to Morgantown for the Mountaineer Challenge held at Mylan Park. The event featured multiple AAA, AA and A teams and the once again Paw Paw stepped up to the challenge.

On the boy’ s side, the Pirates finished in 11th place behind Donnie Tanouye’ s third place finish in the long jump (18’4 1⁄4”).

The Lady Pirates finished in eighth place out of nine teams with 26 points. Leading the way was Joselyn Smith who took first place in the discus with a heave of 100’3”. Smith also finished in eighth place in the shot put with a throw of 28’5 1⁄2”.

Also scoring for Paw Paw were Shayla Tanouye (fourth place, 400 meters, 1:06 and fifth place, high jump, 4’ 8”) and Miah Smith (seventh place, long jump, 15’3 3⁄4”).
