Local man dies after Sunday motorcycle accident

A Morgan County man was severely injured on Sunday, October 15 in a motorcycle accident on Pious Ridge Road, and has died of his injuries after being  flown by helicopter to Winchester Medical Center for treatment.

Morgan County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Johnnie Walter said officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Pious Ridge Road around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning.

On scene, they found the driver of the motorcycle, Scott Curtis Thomas, Sr., 61, had suffered severe head trauma after his KTM dirt bike struck a deer. Thomas was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Walter said Thomas appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed when the collision occurred.

Pious Ridge Road was shut down for roughly an hour on Sunday while responders worked on the scene. The Sheriff’s Department was assisted by Morgan County EMS and Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Company on the scene and at the helicopter landing site.
