Police respond to man lying in road, recover loaded handgun & drugs

Last week, Lt. S.A. Place of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports of a man lying in the roadway in the area of Fairfax Street and Fairview Drive. Upon encountering the individual, Lt. Place questioned why he was in the area.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Morgan County Magistrate Court, Roger F. Griffith, 35, of Berkeley Springs told the officer he was currently using drugs and staying with a known drug abuser/dealer in the area.

Griffith reportedly told Lt. Place he was carrying a handgun on his person. The officer retrieved a loaded Glock .45 from under the man’s sweatshirt. During a further search, police found, in a bag Griffith was carrying, six Suboxone strips, a glass pipe with marijuana residue, digital scales, metal pipes, a case with an unknown powder and an extended, 31-round Glock magazine.

Griffith was charged with carrying a concealed weapon as a prohibited person and is under a $20,000 bond.
