The annual Delectable Mountains Quilt Show opens at the Ice House on Friday, July 28 with a meet-the-artists reception on Saturday, July 29 from 3-5 p.m. Produced by the Morgan Arts Council and curated by Dottie O’ Toole, the show is titled, “All Things Bright and Beautiful.”
Curator O’Toole says, “Quilting is a work of art that comes from the heart. Inspiration can come from various sources. It is a creative process that may begin with a single idea, a piece of fabric or a pattern. Viewers will enjoy immersing themselves in these quilts of bright colors and beautiful patterns. “
The show will feature over 100 quilts from 18 members of the Delectable Mountains Quilt Guild. Quilt sizes range from small wall hangings to large king size quilts. There are a wide range of designs, from quilts made from traditional blocks to embroidered works to hand-dyed fabrics. In addition to full-size quilts, the show includes a boutique featuring purses, table toppers, tote bags, the popular microwave potholders, children’s toys and more.
New this year will be a special display featuring barn quilts created by guild member Lisa Perry and her husband Dave. Additions include a hand quilting frame allowing visitors to learn hand quilting and a children’s corner where children can make their own quilt blocks using different mediums.
Continuing this year is a “show within a show” at the Ice House. Each Saturday throughout the show, guild members will demonstrate a variety of quilting techniques.
The 19th annual Yard- Square Quilts – a display of more than 50 small quilts hanging in local businesses – transforms the entire town into a quilt show. The quilts are sold on Saturday, September 2 at 2 p.m., rain or shine, in a live auction at the Berkeley Springs State Park to benefit the Morgan County Homeless Coalition.
The quilt exhibit, which hangs through September 17, is funded in part from the National Endowment for the Arts, the West Virginia Commission on the Arts and local hotel/motel taxes. The Ice House is at the corner of In- dependence and Mercer Streets in downtown Berkeley Springs.
Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information on this and other MAC activities, call 204-258-2300 or go to www.macicehouse.org.
