Mary Edna Catherine Michael Smith
1936-2023
Mary Edna Catherine Michael Smith, 86, of Middletown, died Saturday, May 13, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family.
Born September 18, 1936, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Ernest Cecil Michael and Maxine Virginia Hovermale.
She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Shepherd University. Upon graduation from college, she began teaching English and Home Economics at Frederick High School, where she met her husband of 52 years, Warren C. Smith, and began lifelong friendships that continued until her passing.
She subsequently taught at Walkersville Middle and High schools, and she retired from Monocacy Middle School. Mrs. Smith was a member and past president of the Rose Hill Garden Club, the Middletown Valley Homemakers, Frederick County Retired Teachers Association and St. John’s United Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren, as well as her son, Michael W. Smith.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Chaney and son-in-law Ron McCurdy, grandchildren Jonathan Harms Mahlandt (Rachael), Grant Chaney (Lauren Capella), Kate Chaney, Caitlin McCurdy (Sam Garland), Devon Lawrence (Robert), and Kelsey McCurdy (Tyler Abbott), and great-grandchildren Finn, Elliot, Darcy, Owen, and Madeline.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Tom Stephens, Joe Michael and Fred Michael, and she will be remembered by her sisters in law, Marilyn Michael and Twila Andrews, as well as her extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. She will also be remembered by her dear friend, John Burrier.
Meemaw, as she was known to her family, was cherished for not only her culinary talents and her ability to make a house feel like a home, but also for her unfiltered commentary, her card shark skills, and her disdain for electronics.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m., on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church Street, Frederick. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 19, 2023 at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 8 N. 2nd Street, Woodsboro. Rev. Sean DeLawder will officiate. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Woodsboro.
