Indians Tennis Team qualifies for State Tournament

by Jamie Harris

It was one whirlwind of a week for the Berkeley Springs High School boys’ and girls’ tennis teams. The Class A/AA Region I tennis tournament started back on Friday, April 29 in Parkers- burg. However, Mother Nature felt that the event needed a lot of rain and postponements. However, despite the roadblocks action got underway and once again the tennis program at Berkeley Springs is sending athletes to the state tournament.

In the team qualifying event the Indians team finished as Class A/AA Region I runners-up and qualified for the team state tournament in Charleston this coming week. The Lady Indians just missed out qualifying for the state tournament with a third place finish.

In the boy’s team event, the Indians defeated North Marion 5-2 to reach the championship finals against a scrappy Weir team. Weir picked up the 6-1 win over the Indians. Players who will be representing Berkeley Springs in the boy’s team state tournament are #1 singles Brandon Pindell, #2 singles Cardin Beal, #3 singles Justin Brinegar, $4 singles Corey Verkouteren. On the doubles side the #1 doubles team of Cardin Beal and Justin Brinegar, #2 doubles team of Brandon Pindell and Corey Verkouteren, the #3 doubles team of Jacob Shekey and Brody Beal.

After battling rain delays on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday both the boys and girls team started the Class A/AA Region I individual singles and doubles play. The Lady Indians did not have a qualifier for the individual event.

On the boy’s side the Indians saw #2 singles Cardin Beal earn a top four placement to advance to the state tournament. In doubles #2 doubles Brandon Pindell and Corey Verkouteren advance to the state doubles tournament.

The Class A/AA State Tennis Championships will begin this Thursday, May 11 and finish this Saturday, May 13 in Charleston.
