Paw Paw Christmas parade carries on holiday tradition

by Lisa Schauer

Paw Paw residents lined Winchester Street on a clear, cold afternoon this past Sunday for the town’s annual Christmas parade.

“Whoop, whoop,” a Paw Paw police siren cut through the silence, announcing the start of a roughly 15-member parade of costumed characters, floats, carolers, first responders, Santa’s sleigh, horses, a live nativity and a marching band.

A trail of candy marked the parade route for several blocks through town as the band played and lights flashed on Sunday, December 4.

People smiled, waved and cheered, shouting “Merry Christmas!” to their neighbors.

As the sun’ s glow slowly faded over the mountain, people gathered to share hot cocoa and cookies during a brief memorial tree lighting ceremony in front of Bank of Romney.

After the parade, carolers

and drummers moved up the hill accompanied by the clip- clop of hooves.

Parade contest winners included Victor Lucus with his decorated Dodge Ram; Betsy Tomlinson with her elf on horse costume; Atikat Acres with their six festive horses and riders; Selena Rodriguez as Rudolph; and Celest Middle for a live nativity with donkey.
